HOW DOES A SOLAR SYSTEM WORK?
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are installed on a roof with maximum sun exposure. The panels are a collection of cells, either monocrystalline or polycrystalline, that convert sunlight into electricity. This energy is then used or stored, based on demand at the time.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN COMPONENTS OFÂ A SOLAR SYSTEM?
There are four main parts that go into a solar system; mounting system, solar panels, inverter(s), and monitoring. There are many different brands of panels and inverters on the market.
Depending on roof size, proximity to the ocean, shading, and overall system size, one of our trained technicians can help choose the best options for your needs.
HOW DOES SOLAR WORK IFÂ I HAVE A FLAT ROOF?
When the roof of your property isn't at the preferred pitch for a solar system, HUB can install a tilt frame to elevate the pitch of panels and ensure optimal performance of your system. Tilt legs raise one side of the panels to face into the sun, and prevent dust and debris from shading the panel by increasing the cleaning effects of rainwater runoff.
If you are unable to tilt for any reason, smart design and regular maintenance can ensure your system us an asset well into the future.
WHAT IS A SOLAR MONITORING SYSTEM? DO I NEED ONE?
A solar monitoring system is normally installed in your switchboard and measures electricity production and consumption. You don't need to have a monitor installed with your system.  However, there are many benefits of deeper insight into the characteristics of a PV system. These include real-time performance, discovery of power-drainers and opportunities to maximise use of solar, as well as calculation of optimal battery size.
HOW DOES THE SOLAR WORK IF I LIVE IN A SHADY AREA?
The obvious answer is to make sure your panels are positioned on your roof to optimise the sun. BUT, there are options such as micro inverters (where each panel has its own inverter) or DC optiisers that can help achieve the maximum output for your solar system in shady areas. Contact us for more information or an assessment of your the shading for your installation.
HOW WILLÂ MY HOME USE THE ENERGY IT PRODUCES?
As the panels convert the sun into energy, during the day is the optimum time for your appliances to run. If your system is converting more than you are using, any extra will be exported back to the grid. If your system isn't generating as much as your using, the grid will top your home up.
HOW DO I KNOW HOW MANY PANELS TO INSTALL ON MY ROOF?
There is no a one size fits all. Amount of panels is dependant on a few factors, such as roof size, budget, and considerations from the grid. The average size system is around 6.6kW. If you use a lot of electricity, then a larger system may suit your needs better.
WHAT IF I AM NOT SATISFIED WITH HUB SOLAR?
We will do our best to take all your needs into consideration before beginning any solar installation on your property. If you have any issues with your system post installation we will happily re-attend to rectify any issues.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SOLAR INSTALLATION?
After installation, we advise you contact your energy retailer to negotiate the best feed in tariff for your new system. This process is outlined in our handover package, and we can walk you through it if you are unsure. Then sit back and enjoy the energy savings and making a difference in the renewable energy space!
DO I NEED TO CLEAN MY SOLAR PANELS AFTER INSTALLATION?
Solar works on sunlight. Dirt and dust can collect on panels, and just like a dirty car windscreen, this can make it hard for light to penetrate. Unfortunately, panels don't have built-in wipers! The occasional washdown will help your panels collect and convert as much solar energy as possible. We recommend cleaning every 6 months or so, and our friendly team is well-equipped to handle this with speed and efficiency. Reach out if you want to book a panel clean.
WHAT ARE SOLAR REBATES AND AM I ENTITLED TO ONE?
Solar rebates or STC's (small-scale technology certificates) are the financial incentives created by the government to reduce the upfront costs of the installation of small-scale renewable energy. The amount of STC's are calculated depending on the size of the system you are installing. HUB offers the STC rebate as a point-of-sale discount to our customers to ensure the best value for renewable energy investment.
CAN I INSTALL A BATTERY LATER?
The short answer is YES!
However, just like rooftop systems, a battery is also not a one size fits all scenario. There are many types of batteries available, and type and size are dependent on the usage, space, budget, and other connect. Reach out if you would like to discuss battery options and we can tailor your battery to your needs.
